Our June presentation at the Bangalow Business Women’s Networking Group was Jody Vassallo in her most raw form and wisest talk yet. This amazing woman has been walking her talk for many years now in her Industry as a Home Economist and more specifically a massive contributor of “a lot” of recipe books under her belt. She has walked some of this path with Jamie Oliver and Donna Hay who for the industry she is in they could be considered the creme dela crème.
She is one of the most driven people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting filled with passion and fortitude with her message. Which over the past 6 years saw her coming into a different arena from her Business of being a Home Economist and Recipe writer to an event organiser on a weekend conference called “Balancing the Busy”.
In the process and the course of events from the learning curve be it steep or just plain catapulting she has experienced a side to business and relationships in partnership that many of us hope we never encounter.
In this raw presentation she got honest and real about business. Sometimes things don’t flow as we expected. Sometimes people take off with your ideas and knowing who you can trust will be as critical as knowing the spots on your own hand. But more than this she spoke of how her most quiet times unravelled a gift she wasn’t expecting. She discovered that her constant striving and pushing for more, while it ended up being a good thing to take her to high places and experience the immensity of what she was bringing to the world of Health and Nutrition it was masking what was missing for her which was her need to feel worthy. She got a constant high from her accomplishments that sustaining it meant the consistent hard work of up streaming to bigger and better, to the point where she realised that she needed to get the high some other way. It wasn’t sustainable and she found the sudden change in times in her industry brought it to a grinding halt with the new generation of younger personalities with mega followers on Instagram were taking the interest in a whole new direction. Failure forced her to STOP. She had to get the high of constantly striving and achieving in order to feel worthy to a new paradigm in her self. Her industry as she knows it was gone. She had to dig deep. Step out of her comfort zone.
In the process she had an awakening where self care was paramount in order for her to feel whole within herself. On came the wisdom of standing back when emotional things were happening, or looking at the big picture. The conscious awareness to observe what she was pushing up against were just the right places where they happened to be the areas that she needed to step back in. To humbly and graciously watch the flow, re-evaluate and then put her mind on to doing something where the doors where opening and refraining from the areas where she felt she had to push. If it wasn’t happening, how was it to sit with the uncomfortable feeling of not doing it and all that arose from that.
Questions started to arrive to her.. “ Is this where I want to be?” The elusive “why”.
Trust became the dominant new force. Choose your confidants wisely to the ultimate realisation that we never truly fail because the notion of “would you still want to do something even if it fails” became an enquiry that brought a new found magic to it. When the floods hit our region Jody came in with her mammoth project yet to bring hope and fundamentally Food to the people hit by the floods with the “Baked Relief” collective of amazing women bringing together thousands of meals. She realised with nothing to loose and service abound on a mission to help these people left without homes, the rewards for her were more than anything else she had done in her past.
Which in conclusion the awareness of when your business is quiet there’s a reason, and rather than filling the holes, stop, reflect and ask yourself “is this really what I want to be doing?” If not there are bigger things out there to drive you to your soul-preneur business which will lead you to an even bigger and better door to dive into and reap the glory of discovering service and doing something because you feel that this is streaming out from you from a place of inspired action and the feeling that that brings is higher than anything you might have imagined.
We are so blessed. We as women can make choices and while being witnessed by our children we need to make them healthy choices as role models. Do what you love. Un-plug so you can plug into you more. Which will light up the world. When women come together.
